Snapshot vs Backup

I'm a noob and I'm having a hard time determining the difference between a backup and a snapshot. Can someone explain the difference and a use case for each?

Thank you

  • Can someone please explain the difference?? If they're the same then why do backups cost money and snapshots are free?

  • Snapshots are manually created and they do not have an expiration date while the instance is active. After destroying the instance, as long as the account is in good standing, the snapshot will remain on the account. Snapshots cannot be downloaded. There is a limit of 10 snapshots per account. If you need more, we encourage you to enable our back up service. Please keep in mind that this is subject to change as we feel necessary in the future.

The automatic backups are attached to the instance (automatically). You can read more about Automatic Backups here:

If you have any additional questions, please open a support ticket and our account managers will be glad to assist further!

  • You mentioned that "Snapshots cannot be downloaded". So are you implying that Backups can be downloaded?

I am just trying to get better sense here since this is supposedly a post explaining difference between snapshot vs backups so.

  • Hello,

    • Snapshots can not be downloaded.
    • Backups can not be downloaded.

We have more information about snapshots and backups in Vultr Docs. If you have additional questions, please open a support ticket, or request an article from the documentation team. We are happy to help!
