Allow option to choose instances residing on physically separate hardware

edited June 2016 in Features and Ideas
For added resilience, if you already have one compute instance on one physical server, it would be great if you had the option to add a second compute instance on a different physical server.

Apologies if this has already been requested.

  • Our system tries to do this by default whenever possible.
  • Ahh, thank you for the feedback Devicenull. Much appreciated.

I have four compute instances running currently and have noticed that three have IP's in the range of 45.32.x.x and the last has an IP of 108.61.x.x. Would this indicate that three of the instances are on one physical machine and the last, is on another physical machine?

If so, it would be a clear indicator that I (and all other Vultr users) do indeed have instances spanning across physical machines.

    Thanks and regards
  • The IPs have nothing to do with what host a machine is on.
  • Thanks for the clarification devicenull.
  • @devicenull Any chance of the host id for each instance being shown in the control panel server list?

...or is this considered sensitive information?
  • It's unlikely to appear in the control panel, but there is https://www.vultr.com/api/#server_neighbors
  • @devicenull Brilliant! That does the job perfectly, and will come in handy in the future!

Thanks for that, I'd somehow missed that api ability.
